Blog-Social-Media-Fact-Fiction

Social Media, Fact from Fiction

A lot is said about using social media as a tool for generating sales and greater profit. Yet, as an example, in the US only 2% of shoppers came directly from a social network to a retail website (2013 Christmas period).

So, the time spent managing your business’ social media campaigns is a waste of time, right? Well, it’s not really that cut and dry. 36% of US shoppers stated that a third of their purchases required them to consult social networks before ultimately making a final purchase. Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter all saw their social referral share grow by 12, 24 and 17 percent respectively.

Where does that leave us?

I suppose it’s fair to say that if you are looking to dramatically increase your sales in the short term then social media marketing is not the correct strategy for you. If, however, you are looking to implement a serious content marketing strategy that will in time deepen your brand awareness throughout the online platform then social marketing is well worth your time and money. Implementing a social media marketing strategy can:

  • Help improve your websites SEO
  • Let you know what people are saying about your company and its products
  • Allow you to interact more personally with customers, building a rapport
  • Generate more customers from new markets

responsive

What is responsive web design?

Responsive web design is a collection of techniques that allow a website to flex and adapt to the size of screen it’s being viewed on.

Someone opening your site on a smartphone will be shown the same site as the person opening it on their laptop but the site will have noticed the constraints and automatically reformatted to give the user an experience better suited to their device.

No more loading a huge website and having to zoom in and out to find the content you’re looking for.

Previously we designed for desktops first and a version for mobile an after thought [if at all]. This has changed, with 30-50% of online traffic being attributed to mobile phones and tablets; we can no longer ignore this – the ‘one site fits all devices’ approach will soon be the norm.

Why responsive web design is vital for your business website?

I wonder what device you are reading this on? A desktop? A laptop? Or perhaps a smartphone?

With more and more devices entering the market it’s not surprising that internet usage attributed to mobiles and tablets is set to take over that on desktops.

This change in the way people consume information means that we need to change the way we share it, encouraging the best possible online experience of our brands and services.

Experience for the user is key.

With Google now focussing on the user experience, those websites that offer an enhanced experience, regardless of device being used, will take priority and therefore rank higher in search.

Responsive design is more cost effective – there is no need for a separate mobile site; one site for all devices means one website to update, one website to host, one website to market.

Responsive design is a way of future proofing your website, the number of people viewing information on mobiles and tablets is only going to increase.

We can see that having a website that is responsive has a direct impact on dwell time and bounce rates – if a user has a better experience on your website they will spend longer on it and they’re also less likely to bounce if the page is optimised to their device. Happy customers = happy business.
